Scott Bakula to Star in No Strings at L.A.'s Reprise! Series

by Broadway.com Staff

Tony and Emmy nominee Scott Bakula will star as David in No Strings, the final Reprise! Broadway's Best production of the 2006-2007 season at UCLA's Freud Playhouse in Los Angeles. Directed by Kay Cole, with musical direction by Gerald Sternbach and costume design by Bob Mackie and Joe McFate, No Strings will preview on May 8, open on May 9, and continue through May 20.

In Richard Rodgers' lyrical No Strings, a successful high-fashion model meets and falls in love with a writer in Paris. While David has been trying to recover from writer's block, he's assumed the dubious role of charming intellectual-in-residence at some of the Continent's more luxurious watering holes. As the model's work takes them on a whirlwind tour of the most exclusive European playgrounds, their romance develops into the first deeply felt, honest relationship either has ever known. The model comes to realize that the lifestyle demanded by her career is stifling the writer, and if he's ever to fulfill the promise of his earlier work, he must go home, and write. Reluctantly, but with no strings, they part, each having discovered anew their capacity to love. The show, which features such songs as "The Sweetest Sounds" and "Love Makes the World Go," opened on Broadway on March 15, 1962, with Richard Kiley as David and played 580 performances. Reprise! has not announced casting for the role of the model, originally played by Diahann Carroll.

Bakula made his Broadway debut as Joe DiMaggio in Marilyn: An American Fable and was nominated for a Tony for Romance/Romance. Other theater credits include the off-Broadway and L.A. productions of Three Guys Naked from the Waist Down and the L.A. and Boston productions of Nite Club Confidential. Bakula has become well-known for his work on television, where he won a Golden Globe and four Emmy nominations for his starring role in Quantum Leap and starred in the Star Trek prequel series Enterprise. His film credits include American Beauty, Life as a House and Major League: Back to the Minors.

Since the beginning (Promises, Promises starring Jason Alexander, Alan Thicke and Jean Smart) more than 10 years ago, the scope of Reprise! productions has grown considerably: Rehearsal time has doubled, costumes and scenery have increased, and orchestras have been enlarged. Originally presented as "in concert" (i.e. scripts in hand), the productions are now completely staged and choreographed. The casts are drawn from the best Broadway performers working today and actors working here in Los Angeles who rarely have the opportunity to appear in musicals. The number of performances of each show has grown from seven to sixteen.
